A Day With Barclay – Barclay Butera

Yesterday, I had the privilege to share a day with design icon Barclay Butera. As an interior designer and a creator of luxury designer furnishings, Barclay is widely recognized as a star of the design industry. Recently, in partnership with Kravet, Barclay launched an innovative line of fabric and rug collections. His sophisticated taste is overtly visible in each of his four thematic design groupings: Mountain, Town & Country, City, and Beach. To view Barclay’s new collections, I encourage you to visit the following link
Kravet Barclay Butera Collection

During my time with Barclay, I learned that in order to become an iconic figure in the design industry, your vocation must be the dominate focus of your personal lifestyle. Like Barclay, you must have an inherent passion for design that is inextricably rooted deep within your heart and soul. Barclay is not only a talented designer, he is actively engaged in the trade, attends all the top parties and social events, and he mingles on equal footing with individuals from all walks of life.

Barclay, I congratulate you on your fabulous new Kravet collections and I thank you for taking the time to educate me on your path to success as a recognizable figure in design. Your positive approach to the business and social aspects of design is a model every luxury interior designer should analyze.

An Evening With A Noble Man

Besides his dapper appearance and sophisticated demeanor, Steve Nobel, founder and principle of NOBELINKS, displays all the relevant characteristics of a noble gentleman. This past Tuesday, I had the pleasure of spending an entire day with Steve that I will never forget.

Steve Nobel is known in the luxury interior design and designer home furnishings industry as the preeminent source of business consulting models. His knowledge of the inter-workings of the interior design trade is without question unparalleled. He exudes an approachably confident understanding of highly technical interior trade issues and when the opportunity presents itself, he visibly beams with pride to impart his valuable information. When Steve speaks, even the talkers stop to listen to his words of wisdom.

Personally, as a young entrepreneur, I appreciate and admire the fact that Steve challenges me as interior designer. He constructively plays the role of devil’s advocate and he causes me to think outside-of-the-box. Without a doubt, Steve’s input has molded me into a more effective businesswoman and enhanced my problem-solving skills on interior design issues.

For taking the time out of your busy schedule, for sharing your valuable thoughts with me, and most of all for believing in me, I thank you Steve. Words can’t express how much I appreciate you and how lucky I feel to have you as a friend and a mentor.

Interior Design Video - AFM Designer Showhouse 2009

Luxury Designer Showhouse Video

Several months ago, my interior design firm, Elements of Design, was selected to design the Library in the $20 Million AFM Designer Showhouse in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Amidst the design process, I was offered the opportunity to participate in an interior design video featuring the Showhouse and its many magnificent features.

This was my first foray into the world of creating interior design videos. At first, I thought I was going to be very nervous once the camera started rolling. Shockingly, I felt completely at home in front in the camera and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire process. Over the course of several hours, I got a small taste of what it must feel like to be an HGTV Design Star. Who knows, maybe one day soon, I will submit to one of the casting calls or local competitions.

I offer my thanks to those individuals at Arizona Foothills Magazine, The Martz Agency, and Paradise Valley Mountainside Homes who contributed to the production of the video. It was an honor and a pleasure to be a part of the event and the interior design video. I thank you all for your time and effort.

In the near future, I look forward to developing and presenting more interior design video content. Until then, stay tuned...

Barbara Barry - Inspiring Interior Design

Recently, I was presented with the humbling honor to share a private dinner with notable interior designer Barbara Barry. For those of you who have not met or heard of Barbara, she is one of the top interior designers in the world. Barbara is an interior design guru who has designed her own private lines of furniture, fabric, lighting, and other luxury décor items. Her versatile design brand is purchased by both luxury consumers as well as by luxury interior design trade members. Personally, I have a great fondness for Barbara Barry’s designer furnishings and décor because of her exquisite taste and the uber level of sophistication of her product lines.

From chatting with Barbara, I learned that interior design is not just a vocation but a lifestyle that can be achieved through dedication, hard work, and a positive attitude. Barbara spoke about her mother being a great source of inspiration for her. Her upbringing in California is reflected in her color palette which can be described as soothing, calming, and rejuvenating. In order to add additional depth to her soothing color palette, Barbara successfully infuses a variety of extraordinary textures. Barbara’s fabrics are of superlative quality that I rarely see in this field. I love Barbara’s fabrics so much that I am currently designing the kitchen in my home with a number of her fabulous fabrics.

At the end of the day, I can’t go without saying that Barbara Barry is one of the loveliest and most endearing women that I have ever met. Her background is inspiring, her charm is affable, and her smile is positively infectious. When she speaks to you, Barbara has the ability to make you feel like you are the only person in her world. For one amazing evening, I was able to garner her attention and since that time with her, I have been more inspired than ever before.

Paradise Valley Arizona Interior Designer Showhouse 2009

As the final weekend for the $20 Million 2009 AFM Designer Showhouse in Paradise Valley, Arizona comes to an end, I can't help but think how encouraged and optimistic I feel about the Arizona interior design community. In hopes of increasing awareness of their individual companies, several of the Valley’s most talented interior designers joined forces to design the interior of this magnificent mountainside home.

For this amazing event, I was presented with the challenge to design the library. Ultimately, I took the rules of design and threw them out the window by opting for a highly eclectic approach to design. I infused a balanced blend of the old and the new as well as masculine and feminine elements. I believe the eclectic mixture caused the library to stand apart from the rest of the competition. I noticed that as the Designer Showhouse tour guests entered my room, they would suddenly lower their voices and the ooohhs and ahhhhs would begin.

Two beautiful contemporary chairs are balanced by a vintage chair from the 1940's. The chairs are anchored by a dominate black velvet chesterfield sofa. The detailed cherry cabinets and coffered ceiling help to create a sense of intimacy in the room. The color palette is ruled by black, creams, and grays. The texture in each material offers the room a sense of depth. The vintage books that I found in Phoenix antique shops give the room a feeling of comfort and warmth. I have spent a tremendous amount of time in this room and I hope the buyer of this magnificent home appreciates the library’s charming qualities.

This AFM Designer Showhouse was my first exposure to this type of event and it was a privilege to have the opportunity to contribute my efforts. I am humbled and honored to have been listed side-by-side with my esteemed colleagues from several of the Valley’s notable interior design firms.

Respectfully,
